Last week we had our first load of free mulch delivered to us here at Sheltering Woods by Quad Cities Tree Care – a tree trimming company from our area. Many tree trimming companies advertise free mulch giveaways mainly because they normally need to PAY to get rid of it. I think that’s really stupid to be perfectly honest!
Our first load consisted of a tremendous amount of mainly pine wood, and by the time we moved it this last weekend, it had been soaked by a downpour or two and had started decomposing rapidly. While scooping it out it left small clouds of steam rising from the high temperature mixture of pine bark and needles.
I came home a few days after we got our load of pine mulch, and lo and behold….ANOTHER pile! It was at this point that I realized I picked the wrong spot for all this mulch…we spent about 8 hours on Saturday scooping it all up and hauling it to the backyard with our tractor and trailer. I got in touch with them and made sure they’ll bring it to the backyard next time. Our neighbor said they could use his driveway because our backyard is really hard to get to for a large trucks.
We also got a lot of mulch put around our Lilac hedge in the process of all this. Now we don’t need to mow it! That’s pretty much my goal with most of my property actually…lots of food plants surrounded by lots of free mulch with no resource intensive grass.
You might be wondering why I named this post with a dollar amount in it! Well, we figured out how much all this mulch would have cost us if we had bought it at a store such as Lowe’s or Menards.
Lowe’s has 2 cubic foot bags for sale for $4.49. Notice that is cubic FOOT. Now we had 17 cubic YARDS delivered in each truckload so that is 34 cubic YARDS of mulch. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard (3*3*3). 34*27 = 918 cubic feet of mulch / 2 = 459 bags of mulch from Lowe’s. 459 * $4.49 = $2,060.91 * tax rate of 7.5% = Total of $2,215.48!
I say “and Climbing” because Quad Cities Tree Care will continue to bring us more mulch as we ask for it…after all, we are both saving each other money!
